So I've been buying some parts for my Cube and one thing that I would like to get is a new exhaust. DC Sports makes a catback system that costs 450 USD. According to a couple folks who have it, it's loud. Unbearably so and they ended up getting an 80 dollar silencer as a result. I'm not too keen on spending 500+ dollars on an exhaust that's too loud. Stillen makes just a muffler for 230 USD which I hear nothing but positive things about. A coworker of mine says that 230 bucks is wayyyy too expensive and if I'm just looking for a better sound, I could grab a cheap universal one off ebay. Which I'm not too keen on doing either. Alternatively, I could go to a muffler shop, have something custom made with some 10 inch takeyari pipes at the end like I REALLY want but I have no idea how much that would end up costing. What do you guys think?

A side exit exhaust like this would also be raaaaaaaad.

An exhaust shop should be able to set you up with something decent for a reasonable price. My suggestion, if all you want is a deeper sound, then see about them replacing your mufflers with something from Magnaflow, and retain your stock resonator as it will help with highway drone.

Your coworker's an idiot. Generally, you get what you pay for. I paid over $500 for my axleback on my BRZ from Nameless. It fit perfectly, looks great, and sounds spectacular. It was made for my car, put together beautifully, and has no point where it resonates since it was designed for this car and engine. A universal fartcan from ebay will make you car louder, but expect fitment issues, having to fab things, and not necessarily getting a good sound. Have you started looking on youtube for examples yet? That's the best way to get an idea of what it will sound like.

I looked up the Stillen exhaust, and it looks like it's an axle-back. So $230 is perfectly reasonable for that. Absolutely do not pick up some universal POS off ebay. It will sound like shit.

Cheaping out on exhaust is a guaranteed way to get something that drones and sounds like a fart can. I'd say go with the Stillen axle-back, but see if anyone in your area has a Cube with the Stillen and check it out in person.

It looks like Tanabe makes a catback too. Their stuff is usually pretty good, I'd say better quality than DC Sports generally. However, I personally like the style of the Stillen more, at least for the style of the Cube.

Listen to youtube videos, figure out what tone of exhaust you want, then find the setup used. I dropped about 350$ for my Miata but it was a used setup that originally costed about 700$.

Yea, both the DC sports and Stillen sound great but no one has done a video of it while driving on the highway so I'm really going by what people say in terms of drone. The whole fitment thing is why I'm not too into getting an eBay muffler too, I want my parts to fit because they were made to fit.

Yea I'm still leaning on the stillen because the shape of the muffler doesn't scream fartcan. I might be inclined to go with the Tanabe if I wind up getting a catback setup but I'm really looking just for a better noise (and a better looking tip, the stock muffler doesn't even reach the rear bumper). Also, someone in my area with a modded Cube? HA! There are only 2 other Cubes in my area, both bone stock. Only person in NJ with a modded one just stanced it and that's it. This is not a popular car to modify. Or own.

My MR2 has one of those crappy universal fart-cans courtesy of one of the previous owners. I'm going to be honest, it doesn't sound terrible, but I wouldn't be able to live with it every day. The thing's stupid loud and very unrefined. It actually sounds pretty racecar, though that could also be because the previous owner did the fitment poorly, chopped the cat off, and left it with little more than a straight pipe. YMMV.

Lol I'm aware that not many people are into the Cubes, but I've been surprised by other cars too.

Neither mod is going to net you much in terms of power gains, so style/sound are going to be the two most important factors (I'd say). I think the Stillen is definitely your best bet.

That is exactly what my coworker has, first gen MR2 straightpiped to a universal muffler. The muffler came with a silencer that he seems to leave in most of the time. It does sound quite cool but I doubt my Cube would be making the exact same sound.

Oh, he has an AW11... Nevermind, the guy's not an idiot. I still think that ebay fartcans are terrible.
